<p>Coral reefs are an important part of the marine ecosystem and play a crucial role in the ocean&#8217;s biodiversity. Unfortunately, however, they are threatened by man-made factors such as climate change, overfishing and pollution. In recent years, however, science has made some progress in saving coral reefs. One of them is &#8222;assisted evolution.&#8220;</p>
<p><a href="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-5112" src="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg" alt="" width="571" height="321" /></a>Assisted Evolution is a method of bioengineered coral reef rescue that aims to use natural variability within coral populations to immunize them from environmental threats such as increased water temperatures and acidity. This method consists of several steps: first, coral populations that are more resistant to elevated water temperatures are identified. Then, these corals are selectively bred to pass on their resistant genes to their offspring. Finally, the bred corals are released on reefs to test their resistance and monitor their growth rate.</p>
<p>There are also other approaches to Assisted Evolution, such as using CRISPR-Cas9 genome-editing technology to modify corals specifically against certain environmental threats.</p>
<p>Several examples show that the use of assisted evolution is promising. One of these is the &#8222;Coral IVF&#8220; (In-Vitro Fertilization) project from Southern Cross University in Australia. In this project, corals that were resistant to elevated water temperatures were brought into a laboratory and artificially fertilized. The resulting larvae were then released onto natural reefs and their growth rate and resistance to elevated water temperatures monitored. The larvae that originated from the resistant corals had a higher survival rate and growth rate than the natural larvae.</p>

<p>Save Nemo e.V. starts again with its team to protect coral reefs after Corona. Destination Indonesia.</p>
<p>Almost three years ago Save Nemo flew to the Philippines to build moorings for the first time. Due to Corona, nothing came of it and a team was stuck in Asia for 2 months.</p>
<p>Now we start again with 2 teams:<br />
<strong>1)</strong> First we check our mooring points in North Sulawesi.<br />
<strong>2)</strong> Then we will map reefs around Ternate (North Moluccas).<br />
<strong>3)</strong> If the political and security situation allows it, there will be an inspection on Timor as well.</p>
<p><strong>NemoPI:</strong></p>
<p>We are particularly excited to test the cloud-based version of NemoPis in Bali.<br />
This version sends pollution water data to our cloud <a href="https://nemopi.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://nemopi.com</a> where the values are analyzed and enriched with artificial intelligence.<br />
We will report on this in detail later.<br />

<p>Die Save Nemo e.V. rückt nach Corona erstmals wieder mit Ihrem Team aus, um Korallenriffe zu schützen. Ziel Indonesien.</p>
<p>Fast drei jahre ist es her, dass die Save Nemo auf die Phillipien geflogen ist um dort erstmalig Moorings zu bauen. Durch Corona wurde daraus nichts und ein Team steckte für 2 Monate in Asien fest.</p>
<p><em>Nun starten wir wieder durch und das gleich mit 2 Teams:</em><br />
<strong>1)</strong> Zuerst überprüfen wir unsere Mooringpunkte in Nord Sulawesi<br />
<strong>2)</strong> Danach sollen die Riffe rund um Ternate (Nord Molukken) kartiert werden.<br />
<strong>3)</strong> Wenn es die politische und Sicherheitslage zulässt wird es ebenfalls auf Timor eine Bestandsaufnahme geben.</p>
<p><strong>NemoPI:</strong></p>
<p>Ganz besonders freuen wir uns die cloudbasierende Version des NemoPis auf Bali zu testen.<br />
Diese Version sendet Gewässerdaten an unsere Cloud <a href="https://nemopi.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://nemopi.com</a> in der die Werte analysiert und mit künstlicher Intelligenz angereichert werden.<br />
Hierzu werden wir ausführlich berichten.<br />

<p>Coral reefs are an important part of the marine ecosystem and play a crucial role in the ocean&#8217;s biodiversity. Unfortunately, however, they are threatened by man-made factors such as climate change, overfishing and pollution. In recent years, however, science has made some progress in saving coral reefs. One of them is &#8222;assisted evolution.&#8220;</p>
<p><a href="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-5112" src="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg" alt="" width="571" height="321" /></a>Assisted Evolution is a method of bioengineered coral reef rescue that aims to use natural variability within coral populations to immunize them from environmental threats such as increased water temperatures and acidity. This method consists of several steps: first, coral populations that are more resistant to elevated water temperatures are identified. Then, these corals are selectively bred to pass on their resistant genes to their offspring. Finally, the bred corals are released on reefs to test their resistance and monitor their growth rate.</p>
<p>There are also other approaches to Assisted Evolution, such as using CRISPR-Cas9 genome-editing technology to modify corals specifically against certain environmental threats.</p>
<p>Several examples show that the use of assisted evolution is promising. One of these is the &#8222;Coral IVF&#8220; (In-Vitro Fertilization) project from Southern Cross University in Australia. In this project, corals that were resistant to elevated water temperatures were brought into a laboratory and artificially fertilized. The resulting larvae were then released onto natural reefs and their growth rate and resistance to elevated water temperatures monitored. The larvae that originated from the resistant corals had a higher survival rate and growth rate than the natural larvae.</p>

<p>Korallenriffe sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil des marinen Ökosystems und spielen eine entscheidende Rolle für die Biodiversität des Ozeans. Leider sind sie jedoch durch menschgemachte Faktoren wie Klimawandel, Überfischung und Verschmutzung gefährdet. In den letzten Jahren hat die Wissenschaft jedoch einige Fortschritte bei der Rettung der Korallenriffe gemacht. Eine davon ist die „Assisted Evolution“.</p>
<p><a href="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-5112" src="https://marinemadnessdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/fragments.jpg" alt="" width="571" height="321" /></a>Assisted Evolution ist eine Methode der biotechnologischen Korallenriff-Rettung, die darauf abzielt, die natürliche Variabilität innerhalb der Korallenpopulationen zu nutzen, um sie gegenüber Umweltbedrohungen wie erhöhten Wassertemperaturen und Säuregehalt zu immunisieren. Diese Methode besteht aus mehreren Schritten: Erstens werden Korallenpopulationen identifiziert, die resistenter gegenüber erhöhten Wassertemperaturen sind. Dann werden diese Korallen gezielt gezüchtet, um ihre resistente Gene an ihre Nachkommen weiterzugeben. Schließlich werden die gezüchteten Korallen an Riffen ausgesetzt, um ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit zu testen und ihre Wachstumsrate zu überwachen.</p>
<p>Es gibt auch andere Ansätze bei der Assisted Evolution, wie etwa die Verwendung von CRISPR-Cas9 Genome-editing-Technologie, um Korallen gezielt gegen bestimmte Umweltbedrohungen zu modifizieren.</p>
<p>Dass die Anwendung von Assisted Evolution erfolgversprechend ist, zeigen einige Beispiele. Eines davon ist das Projekt „Coral IVF“ (In-Vitro Fertilization) von der Southern Cross University in Australien. In diesem Projekt wurden Korallen, die resistent gegen erhöhte Wassertemperaturen waren, in ein Labor gebracht und dort künstlich befruchtet. Our development team has been really busy. Here is our optimized turbidity sensor in its new housing.</p>
<p>ABut how does it work? We design our sensors and housings ourselves.<br />
In this case the housing of our open source water sensor that measures suspended matter in the oceans and transmits it to our NemoPI cloud for evaluation.</p>
<p>The good thing at the end: of course we publish all 3D -data (STL) for rebuilding after testing here on www.save-nemo.org as open source.</p>

<p><strong>Trübungssensor Januar 2023:</strong><br />
Unser Entwickler Team war richtig fleißig. Hier unser optimierter Tübungssensor in seinem neuen Gehäuse.</p>
<p>Aber wie funktioniert das? Wir entwerfen unsere Sensoren und Gehäuse selbst.<br />
In diesem Fall das Gehäude unseres Open Source Wassersensor der Schwebstoffe in den Meeren miss und in unser NemoPI Cloud überträgt und auswertet.</p>
<p>Das Gute zum Schluss: selbstverständlich veröffentlichen wir alle 3D -Daten (STL) zum Nachbauen nach Erprobung hier auf <a href="http://www.save-nemo.org">www.save-nemo.org</a> als Open Source.</p>

<p>Save Nemo is one of the 5 finalists of the Ocean Tribute Award 2023 with its underwater weather station Nemo-Pi!</p>
<p>The &#8222;ocean tribute&#8220; award &#8211; an initiative of boot Düsseldorf.<br />
Together with the partners of the Fürst Albert Foundation and the German Ocean Foundation, the award has been honoring ocean protection initiatives, associations and projects that are particularly committed to the preservation of the oceans since 2018.</p>

Now it&#8217;s time to go back to the normal work of Save Nemo because already in May, our next rescue operation in Indonesia will start.</p>

<p>Die Save Nemo ist mit ihrer Unterwasser Wetterstation Nemo-Pi einer der 5 Finalisten des Ocean Tribute Award 2023!</p>
<p>Der „Ocean Tribute“ Award &#8211; eine Initiative der boot Düsseldorf.<br />
Zusammen mit den Partnern der Fürst Albert Stiftung und der Deutschen Meeresstiftung zeichnet der Award seit 2018 Meeresschutz-Initiativen, Vereinigungen und Projekte aus, die sich besonders für den Erhalt der Meere einsetzen.</p>

<h3>Update:</h3>
<p>Leider konnten wir diesem Award nicht gewinnen. Wir sind ein wenig traurig &#8211; sehen aber auch warum dies so war und versprochen: wir arbeiten daran.<br />
Jetzt geht es wieder zurück zur normalen Vereinsarbeit denn schon im Mai startet unsere nächste Rettungsaktion in Indonesien.</p>
